Matt's Trip to Asia - Spring 2009
Spring 2009 I spent three months working and living in Singapore and South
East Asia. I was in Japan in 2005, but haven't travelled to any other Asian
countries. My job gave me the opportunity to live in Singapore, so I
brought my camera and when time permitted, went exploring.
This was a bit different for me than in the past. Previously, when
travelling to foreign countries, I was on vacation and taking pictures was
one of my main objectives. However, this time I was working and not
vacationing, so the available time to take pictures was different. I spent
roughly half my time in Singapore, with the other time split up among trips
to Japan, China, Korea, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
You can scroll down and explore, or you can see
these as a slideshow. (Please note this may not work with Internet
Exporer properly. It works with Chrome & Firefox)
I hope you enjoy the brief exploration of Asia as I did, enjoy the
pictures.
-Matt
Singapore
Singapore. One of
the handful of City States in the world (Monaco, and the Vatican being the
other major ones). A small country in land mass, but just under 5 million
people live here. A thriving metropolis in Asia. Many people in the
United States have heard of it, but few actually
know where it is.
One degree north of the equator results in a relatively warm and humid
country. The temperature is 85-90f (29-32c) with 90% humidity. A little
more humid than I am used to in Northern California, but well within
comfort ranges with proper attire.
I spent the first month in Singapore across the street from the Marine
Parade shopping center, on the east coast area. Later moving to the
Arab Street area, and finally the Quays area. My photos are taken around
each of these locations, plus some additional exploring that I did.

Japan - Tokyo & Nikko
Japan. I was in Tokyo
back in 2005
and even got a chance to travel out to Kamakura. This time I
spent two weeks in Kawasaki, and later another week in Hakozaki. I had
some spare time to explore
Nikko, Harajuku, and
Odaiba.

China - Guangzhou
A week in China. I have never been, so wasn't sure what to expect.
Guangzhou is not a tourist town, but an industry town, and I didn't have
much free time. This worked well for my job, but unfortunately didn't
afford me much time to shoot photos.
Hong Kong - Kowloon
I was able to spend two weekends in Kowloon, the area across the bay from
Hong Kong. This gave me a wonderful view of the Hong Kong skyline,
plus easy access around the area. I spent the weekends exploring the
shopping and areas around.

Indonesia - Bali
A break from the rest of Asia. After experiencing the "Shopping Mall" in
every asian country I visited, it was a nice break to experience Bali. I
spent only a week here, and I want to go back. All the pictures are from
time spent in Ubud (central Bali). I also spent a couple days at Seminyak
on the beach, not taking pictures (taking surf lessons).

Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur
Twenty-four hours was all I got in Malaysia. Which is rather ironic
considering how close it is to Singapore. Kuala Lumpur is a huge city
of around seven million people, something I hadn't expected until I got
there. The views of the Petronas tower at night were quite spectacular.
